MDF – What you need to know

The Main Distribution Frame, or MDF as it is commonly known, is where the legal responsibility of NBN and the other Telco’s finish. From the Main Distribution Frame / MDF into the premises, all telecommunications wiring is privately owned and maintained.
Many people refer to the Main Distribution Frame as an MDF box or MDF for short. The Main Distribution Frame / MDF or MDF Box is the lifeline of many residential and business tenants and must not be accessed by amateurs!

A to B Jumpering
Many service providers refer to MDF connections as “A to B jumpering”.
An A to B jumper means a connection will be made from the provider’s side of the frame “A” to the customer’s side “B”.
When you order an NBN service a technician from NBN co will be dispatched to connect your line on the “A” side of the MDF frame.
From there, our technicians will identify the correct NBN service and install a jumper from the “A” side to the “B” side to connect your service.
Phoneworks technicians are highly trained in all MDF work and must not be done by an amateur as essential services can be easily disconnected. (Lifts and Fire)
MDF Installations & Repairs
Wherever there is an apartment or office building in Melbourne the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) exists.
Many of these frames are extremely old and weathered depending on the age of the building.
It is important that these frames are kept in new condition as a quality NBN connection depends on it.
If an MDF frame is beyond repair a new one will need to be installed. All services on that frame will need to be temporarily disconnected and relocated to a new frame.
